My buzzing phone vibrates against my cheek. Groaning in my sleep, I press the side button to quiet it and tuck my arms under my pillow. My body relaxes as I fall back into a deep slumber, but my phone goes off again.

“Ugh,” I groan, silencing it and tossing it to my side.

When the buzzing begins again, I cover my head with the extra pillow and squeeze my eyes. It's not even morning. I’m exhausted. What does a girl have to do to get some sleep around here?

I try to fall back asleep, but it's no use. My mind is already going. I check the time on my phone and am fully awake when I see Wilder was the person calling. Is he okay?

Sitting up in bed, I swipe my hair from my face. Before I can call him back, his name appears on my screen.

I jolt and answer.

“Hello?” I whisper. My voice is hoarse.

“Hey, sleepyhead, about time you answered.”

“It's five in the morning.”

“I know, but I have a surprise, so I need you up and ready in five minutes.”

“What?” I ask in disbelief.

“Yeah, come on. Time's ticking.”

“Ticking for what? We have a date tonight. As in P.M. not A.M.”

His deep laughter serenades me. “I know, but I really wanna show you something. It'll be worth it, and we'll grab breakfast afterward.”

I can't deny him when I hear the excitement in his voice. I also can’t deny that I’d rather see him sooner than later in the day.

“Okay. Give me a few. What should I wear?”

“Something comfortable. Wear sneakers, and bring a sweater.”

“Okay.” I stand and drag my feet to the bathroom. I look at myself in the mirror and cringe. My hair's a wild mess, my eyes are swollen, and I have sheet marks on my cheek.

“I'll pick you up in a few,” Wilder interrupts my observation.

“I'll hurry.”

We hang up, and I wash my face and brush my teeth, going through my routine. No way I'll have time to shower. I braid my hair, taming it as much as possible, and get dressed.

In the kitchen, I leave Uncle Sal a note, letting him know I'm out with Wilder. As I'm finishing it, my phone vibrates.

“On my way out,” I say as I grab my purse and coat.

Wilder is standing by the passenger door with a wide smile.

“Good morning.” He reaches for my waist, dropping a soft kiss on my lips.

“Hi,” I whisper, loving the way his strong arms hold me.

“Let's go.” He bounces on his toes.

“I have no idea what your plan is, but you’re way too excited for five in the morning.” I buckle myself.

Wilder shrugs with a smile. “I get to see you. That makes me happy.” Every inch of me tingles at hearing his words.

“That makes me happy, too.” I smile over at him.

He reaches for my hand as he drives toward Town Square. I always love the way his calloused touch feels.

“How was the auction?”

“Great. It was a successful one, which always helps the ranch.” His fingers curl around mine.
